Steven M. Jones

Born in Thailand in 1962, Steven Muthikul Jones developed his artistic sensibility from an early age, shaped by his father’s collection of art books and a home environment that encouraged creative exploration. His father, an author who also illustrated and sculpted as a pastime, recognised and nurtured Steven’s interest in the arts, laying the foundation for a lifelong engagement with visual expression.

As a teenager, Steven pursued formal training in drawing, oil painting, and colour theory under respected Thai artists such as Vichit Chaiwong. During this period, he discovered a particular affinity for sculpture, experimenting across materials including wood, clay, and cement. These formative years established the technical versatility and tactile understanding of form that continue to define his practice today.

While studying Political Science at Ramkhamhaeng University in Bangkok, Steven worked with advertising firms as an illustrator and model-maker, producing mock-ups and sculptural prototypes for commercial campaigns and film productions. This experience refined his precision and compositional discipline, while deepening his interest in the relationship between movement, narrative, and three-dimensional form.

Alongside his professional work, Steven continued to study major artistic movements including Art Deco, Impressionism, Expressionism, and Surrealism, developing a visual language that balances elegance, dynamism, and emotional resonance. In 1999, he produced his first major collection of bronze and patina works, Insects, personally overseeing every stage of the bronze casting and patination process. This was followed by Rhythm and Classical Musician, series that further established his distinctive sculptural voice through expressive interpretations of motion and human gesture.

Over the following decades, Steven expanded his body of work through collections inspired by themes of family, rebirth, Thai literature, and the natural world. His sculptures have been acquired by both private and corporate collectors, including members of the Thai royal family, and are recognised for their refined craftsmanship and charismatic presence. Today, Steven continues to develop new works that merge contemporary aesthetics with motifs drawn from Thai cultural heritage, creating sculptures that embody both technical mastery and poetic sensitivity.
