About Metakaos

Metakaos is a multidisciplinary art studio and curatorial practice specializing in site-responsive artworks and sculptural environments. Working across private residences, hospitality spaces, corporate environments, and public installations, we create holistic artistic experiences where art, architecture, and spatial design exist in dialogue.

From curation and collection development to sculpture design, fabrication, and installation, Metakaos provides a comprehensive end-to-end approach shaped by context, materiality, and human experience.

Our History

Founded by Massimo Mercurio, Metakaos drew its name from two Greek words, meta, meaning “beyond” and kaos, meaning “primordial disorder,” reflecting the studio’s belief in transformation through creative experimentation, standing as a more radical, avant-garde approach to art. Beyond a mere shop for artifacts, odds, and ends, Metakaos styled itself as an art gallery and cultural space in Singapore as well as a meeting point for creatives, collectors, and thinkers, collectively aimed at pushing the envelope of art through a synthesis of eastern and western styles.

Setting up within a relatively small shophouse in Kim Yam Road in 2007, Metakaos was met with great success, spurring a creative surge and resulting in collaborations with artists such as Steven Jones from Thailand and Chua Boon Kee from Singapore, among many others. Anchored by a wine bar and a shared passion for culture and dialogue, the space became a hub for exchange and experimentation across the 2000s and into the 2010s.

This spirit of collaboration and cross-disciplinary thinking ultimately led to the evolution of Metakaos into an art studio, as Massimo joined forces with fellow creatives to realise his sculptural vision and develop both collaborative works as well as his very own.

Metakaos Today

Today, Metakaos stands as a digitally led practice, creating and curating sculptures, paintings, and art-led environments that are conceived in dialogue with their architectural and cultural settings, whether within a corporate headquarters, a private residence, or as a defining presence in the public realm. Its artworks have expanded beyond Singapore’s borders, being found in various spaces across China, Vietnam, and Dubai.

With each of our projects, we at Metakaos endeavours to transform spaces with meaningful, timeless works that spark connection, emotion, and discussion.

PURPOSE & VISION

At Metakaos, our vision is to explore the evolving relationship between art, space, and human experience. We believe that art should not exist in isolation, but in dialogue with its surroundings—shaping environments, provoking thought, and enriching the spaces in which people live and work.

From its earliest beginnings, Metakaos was conceived as a platform for creative exchange. The studio continues to embrace this spirit by fostering a dialogue between Eastern and Western artistic traditions, encouraging experimentation across cultural perspectives from different artists. Through this exchange, artists are invited to reinterpret traditional forms and philosophies within a contemporary framework, producing works that are both globally informed and culturally resonant.

Central to this vision is the philosophy developed by our founder, Massimo Mercurio, which he describes as Neofuturism. Drawing inspiration from science, engineering, and the aesthetics of the Futurist movement—hence the name—Neofuturism explores the intersection of art and technological thought. Concepts such as motion, structure, mathematics, and energy become integral to the artistic language, resulting in works that embody both intellectual depth and visual dynamism.

This perspective informs the way Metakaos approaches creative projects across disciplines. By combining artistic sensibility with technical understanding, we are able to translate complex ideas into tangible works—whether through sculpture, curated interiors, or bespoke design elements that extend an architectural vision into the spaces people inhabit.

Ultimately, Metakaos seeks to push the boundaries of contemporary artistic practice by bridging cultures, disciplines, and ideas. Through the fusion of Asian and Western influences, tradition and innovation, we aim to create works that reflect the complexity of the modern world while remaining timeless in their meaning and presence.
