MAssimo Mercurio
Born in Rome, Italy, Massimo Mercurio relocated to Asia at the age of 24, working between Bangkok and Singapore, where he later settled down. Majoring in art, philosophy, and literature at the College Marcantonio Colonna, he then finished a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rome, developing a multidisciplinary foundation that continues to define his artistic language to this day.
His engineering background informs works that feel both dynamic and deliberate: villas that appear poised in motion, sculptures constructed with structural precision, and compositions that invite intellectual engagement. Further studies in architecture and construction management expanded his understanding of space, allowing him to move fluidly between conceptual vision and physical realisation.
During his more than two decades in Asia, Massimo immersed himself in regional culture and language, an experience that profoundly influenced his practice. He was one of the principal creative forces behind artistic endeavours such as the Auspicious Series, a collection of metallic sculptures created in collaboration with Singaporean artist Chua Boon Kee and inspired by the gestural power of Chinese calligraphy, translating brushstroke energy into sculptural form.
As Metakaos’s founder and the artist behind the majority of its large-scale installations, Massimo shapes many of the studio’s most ambitious projects. His works command presence while maintaining compositional clarity: sculptural statements that merge philosophy, engineering, and artistic intuition into enduring spatial experiences.
