Chua Boon Kee
Born in Singapore in 1953, Chua Boon Kee has devoted his life to sculpture, becoming a full-time artist in 1996. His practice is distinguished by powerful sculptural series inspired by ancient scripts and enduring symbols of strength, protection, and blessing: works that translate cultural memory into commanding contemporary forms.
A graduate of the Baharuddin Vocational Institute in Applied Sculpture, Mr. Chua was mentored by renowned steel sculptor Tan Teng Kee. Early experience in a shipyard equipped him with advanced welding techniques, a technical mastery that remains central to his practice today. His sculptures combine structural strength with expressive fluidity, revealing both discipline and dynamism in metal.
Over the decades, Mr. Chua has explored materials including steel, wood, stone, and resin, continuously refining his visual language while remaining anchored in Asian philosophies and values. His works are known for their calligraphic energy—solid forms that appear to move, carrying both weight and grace.
With more than 50 exhibitions to his name, he has presented his work internationally, including in Beijing following recognition as an outstanding overseas Chinese artist in 2007. In 2014, he unveiled Flowing in London as part of the Chinatown Arts Space/Shatesbury SUSTAIN commission, marking a significant milestone in his public art career.
A respected figure within the artistic community, Mr. Chua continues to create sculptures that embody resilience, heritage, and spiritual presence, crafting timeless works that resonate across cultures and environments.
